The Common Admission Test held annually by the IIMs is the most common entrance exam for MBA admissions to top-notch B-schools. CAT 2024 will allow students to apply for admission to IIMs among other top institutes for the batch of 2025-27.
Students aiming for admission to MBA programs must clear this exam and make the cut-offs before being selected for further rounds conducted by the institutions. Clearing the CAT exam does not guarantee admission to the IIMs as all the institutes follow individual admission processes, including interviews and group discussions.
For CAT 2023, approximately 3.3 lakh registrations were made out of which 2.8 lakh+ candidates appeared for the exam. This marks a drastic increase in the number of applicants.

Along with 21 IIMs, other top B-schools also accept CAT scores for admission to their MBA programs. This year, IIFT Delhi is also accepting CAT scores and will not be conducting its own entrance exam. Given below are some of the top institutes accepting CAT exam scores:
The CAT results will be available on the official website tentatively in the second week of January 2025. The CAT 2024 results will be valid till December 2025.
The IIMs will also release cut-offs for the 2025-27 batch. There is no centralized counseling for the CAT exam as all the IIMs have their own procedure for interviews and further admission rounds.
Once the CAT results are released, IIMs and other top B-schools begin releasing their shortlists for further admission rounds. The admission process at IIMs primarily comprises 3 stages:
The old IIMs follow an individual process while 9 new & baby IIMs follow a Common Admission Process (CAP) wherein the admission rounds are common. However, the final merit lists are released separately by each IIM. Aspirants who wish to get admission to IIM Mumbai must apply for it separately.
Over the years, the CAT exam has observed various changes in terms of exam duration and number of questions. The most recent change had arrived owing to the pandemic as the number of questions and time both decreased. Given below are the changes in the exam over the past years.
